* Job Summary:
* The Venous Access RN Specialist serves as an infusion expert to support nursing staff and patients by: Assesses patients for appropriateness of therapy, correctness of infusion prescription and appropriate vascular access device selection. Instructs staff nurses how to insert difficult peripheral intravenous access catheters as well as site selection. Participates in collaborative planning of care for the infusion patient both informally and formally. Serves as educational resource for healthcare organizational staff including physicians, nurses and other members of the healthcare team.




* Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
*

  • Monitors patients' infusion devices on a regular basis and documents according to organizational policy. Prioritizes devices that require more frequent monitoring.
    * Assesses patients for appropriateness of therapy, correctness of infusion prescription and appropriate vascular access device selection. Collaborates with medical staff to create venous access algorithms to best meet patients' access needs.
    * Serves as venous access clinical expert to coach and instruct staff at the bedside to enhance their intravenous access skills, phlebotomy, and related infusion therapy needs.
    * Properly places peripheral and midline catheters and other specialty devices. Identifies lines that require radiological evaluation. Evaluates lines for use of de-clotting techniques and agents. Continually monitors national trends and implements new evidenced based equipment and infusion techniques.
    * Maintains ultrasound skill credentialing and performs procedure safely for venous access. Properly uses other advanced equipment for safe venous access such as accuvein.
    * Collaborates with physician and health care team on difficult infusion therapy and venous access as appropriate to plan of care. Cognizant of complication development and appropriate interventions. Take appropriate actions to prevent and manage these complications.
    * Performs weekly surveillance of ventral venous access lines. Collects, analyzes, displays, and reports data to appropriate committees and teams and participates in performance improvement.
    * Implements standards of care and practice using the nursing process and practice guidelines of the Infusion Nursing Society as well as established hospital policies.
    * Demonstrates proficiency and knowledge in problem identification and solving activities Participates in research and performance improvement projects for infusion therapy.
    * Inputs correct patient charges and associated documentation. Continually, monitors national trends for updates to charges, coding, and related documentation. Implements new methods as appropriate.
    * Serves as educational resource for healthcare organizational staff including physicians, nurses and other members of the healthcare team. Participates in formal and informal staff educational activities.
    * Works in collaboration with Outpatient Infusion Therapy regularly to provide consistent infusion therapy throughout the system.
    * Provides expertise to develop and continually update infusion therapy related policies and procedures.
    * Serves as clinical expert to the value analysis team in order to supply facility with most appropriate venous access supplies and equipment. Active member of central line associated blood stream infection team.
    * Acts as a liaison to the laboratory to create a minimal re-collect and specimen rejection rate. Provides nurses with communication and instruction based on findings and performance improvement actions.




    * Education, Experience, Qualifications:

  • Current licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Florida.
    * Must have a minimum of 3 years recent clinical nursing experience.
    * PICC insertion procedures experience strongly preferred.
    * Credentialing in the VA-BC specialty is preferred and is required within 9 months of hire.
    * Basic Life Support (BLS Provider) certification from American Heart Assoc. required.
